Understanding Learning Disabilities

What is it like to have a Learning Disability? In 1989, Richard D. Lavoie videotaped a workshop called, “The F.A.T. City Workshop,” where parents, teachers, educational specialists and others were put through a series of exercises to mimic what it is like to live with a learning disability.

As a parent of children with learning disabilities, to say it changed my life and the way I view children struggling in school is a bold understatement.

The video is a “must-see” for all parents, teachers, and anybody that has contact with children that have difficulties learning. Everyone who watches the video either says it changed their life or recommends that ALL teachers watch it. Just read the reviews on Amazon and you’ll see.

Although the video was produced in 1989 and the production value is a bit dated, the content and presentation are timeless. There is a more current follow-up video but this original version is a prerequisite and should be seen first.

I don’t have to tell you to make sure you have your child’s teachers watch the video if they haven’t already seen it. After watching it yourself for the first time, you will be on your way to the school to watch it again with them.

We’re all looking for ways to help our children and find help with the IEP process. Watching this video is a great first step to an Easy IEP.
